What a full PTE Core practice test includes

One test covers all nineteen task types: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text and Write Email in Part 1; five Reading task types including Reorder Paragraph and both Fill in the Blanks formats; and seven Listening task types from Summarize Spoken Text to Write from Dictation. Recordings play once, there is no Record button during the test, and Part 1 starts your microphone for you exactly as the real software does.

How it is scored

Reading and Listening items are marked as soon as you finish. Speaking and Writing are assessed on the dimensions PTE reports — content, pronunciation and oral fluency for spoken answers, content, form, grammar and vocabulary for written ones — and returned as an estimated score out of 90 with specific feedback. Each skill is converted to a Canadian Language Benchmark using IRCC’s published table, and because IRCC assesses every skill separately, the report shows the weakest one: that is the level an application is judged at.

Why timed practice matters

PTE Core is about two hours in one sitting with no break. Speaking & Writing runs 50–65 minutes, Reading 27–37 and Listening 22–37, and the software moves on by itself when a task’s time is up. Practising under those rules is how you find out whether you can still think at minute ninety.

How to use full tests in your prep

Sit one full test early to see which skill is holding your CLB down — with PTE Core the weakest skill is the only one that matters for an application — then work on that skill and sit another full test close to your booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE Core accepted for Canadian immigration?

Yes. IRCC approves PTE Core for economic immigration programmes that require an English test, and publishes the conversion from PTE Core scores to Canadian Language Benchmarks. A score is valid for two years from the test date.

How is the score worked out here?

Each skill is reported on the 10–90 scale and converted to a CLB level with IRCC’s own table, which we reproduce to the number. The section scores themselves are estimates: Pearson scores adaptively against an item bank it does not publish, so no practice test outside Pearson can reproduce its marking exactly. Pearson also states that the overall score is not an average of the skill scores and cannot be derived from them by any formula — the headline number here is our estimate and is labelled as one.

How is this different from PTE Academic?

PTE Core is the general-English test IRCC accepts for immigration; PTE Academic is for study. Two task types are unique to Core — Respond to a Situation and Write Email — and Core has no Essay or Re-tell Lecture. Practising Academic material will leave you unprepared for both.

Can I take PTE Core at home?

No. Pearson requires PTE Core to be taken at an authorised test centre on their computer, with a headset and microphone provided.

Are these real PTE questions?

No. Every text, recording and task is written for ExamStep to Pearson’s published test specification. PTE and PTE Core are trademarks of Pearson; ExamStep is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Pearson.
