What Changed in the 2026 TOEFL iBT
ETS rolled out a redesigned TOEFL iBT starting January 21, 2026. The test now runs about 90 minutes of testing time (ETS estimates 1 hr 23 min to 1 hr 29 min) with no scheduled break; test time does not include directions, and ETS asks you to allow approximately two hours to complete the test. - Listening (about 29 minutes, 47 items) — covers response selection, conversations, announcements, and academic talks
- Writing (about 23 minutes, 12 items) — includes a new sentence-building task plus email and academic discussion writing
- Speaking (about 8 minutes, 11 items) — includes a new "listen and repeat" task plus interview-style responses
Reading and Listening are now multistage adaptive, meaning question difficulty adjusts to your performance in real time, which is why item counts and exact timing can vary slightly test to test. The New 1-6 Scoring Scale
