The two Speaking tasks in 2026
ETS lists the Speaking section as 11 items in about 8 minutes of base time, in two task types, and you speak into a microphone to record your answers.
Listen and Repeat
ETS: you listen to short sentences and repeat them exactly as you hear them. Its blueprint says the sentences grow in length and complexity, from one short clause to longer ones with dependent and relative clauses.
Take an Interview
ETS: a simulated interview about academic or campus situations. The blueprint says the answers move from brief factual statements to opinion, explanation, prediction and narration, and get harder across the task.
Each item is worth up to 5 points. ETS scores these spoken answers with AI, which its blueprint describes as natural language processing and machine learning that assess features like fluency, coherence and grammar, and reports the section on the 1–6 scale.

How our marking works
This is what our marker does, not what ETS does. Each recording is turned into a transcript, and the transcript is scored on the same 0–5 scale, in half points.

- Change: The example stops mid-sentence (“I missed a deadline because I”). Start the example sooner so the answer ends on its point before the clock does.

Is there a free TOEFL Speaking test with a score?
Yes. A free account (no card) includes one Speaking practice test, fully marked: every response scored out of five, with the transcript and notes. Your free account includes one full mock exam with every section scored, including Writing and Speaking; the detailed Writing and Speaking feedback comes with a pass.
How is my TOEFL Speaking scored here?
Your recording is turned into a transcript, and our AI marker scores it on the 0–5 scale ETS uses for each Speaking item, in half points. A Listen and Repeat answer is compared with the sentence you heard. An interview answer is judged on whether it answers the question, how smoothly it runs (from the hesitations and restarts in the transcript, and your speaking rate and long pauses) and your grammar and vocabulary, then given an overall score.
Is the band an official TOEFL score?
No. The section band is our estimate, not an ETS score. ETS scores the real test and has not published how Speaking points become a band, so we turn the average of your response scores into a band on our own ladder. Use it to track progress between practice tests.
Can it judge my pronunciation?
No, and it does not pretend to. It marks a transcript, which keeps your words, restarts and pauses but not the sounds you made, so accent, individual sounds and intonation are not scored. If your words were clear enough to be transcribed correctly, that is what the marker sees.
How many TOEFL Speaking tasks can I practise?
