TOEFL Vocabulary for Every Task
Master the exact words and phrases each TOEFL iBT task rewards. 487 words in 12 task lists, each with a definition, example sentences and a tip for using it in the exam.
187 of the words are free to open · the trainer adds flashcards, quizzes and spaced review.
Reading · 3 bundles
Build the everyday reading vocabulary the TOEFL iBT uses in notices, schedules, messages and other practical texts, so you can find the answer without re-reading the passage.
Learn the academic vocabulary that carries argument and evidence in a TOEFL reading passage — the hedges, connectors and abstract nouns that tell you what the writer actually claims.
Train the spelling and word-form knowledge this task actually tests: you see part of a word inside an academic paragraph and must complete it correctly.
Listening · 4 bundles
Pick up the conversational vocabulary of campus life — requests, problems, arrangements and the polite formulas around them — so a two-speaker exchange stays easy to follow.
Learn the vocabulary of notices and announcements — changes, deadlines, requirements and instructions — which is where the answerable detail in this task always sits.
Build the lecture vocabulary that signals structure and emphasis — how a lecturer introduces a point, qualifies it, contrasts it and marks what matters.
Master the short functional phrases this task turns on — the natural reply to an offer, a complaint, an apology or an invitation.
Writing · 3 bundles
Learn the connectors and structural words this task rearranges — the pieces that decide where a clause can legally go in an English sentence.
Build the functional email vocabulary this task rewards — requesting, explaining, apologising and proposing, in a register that fits the person you are writing to.
Learn the discussion vocabulary that earns marks here — stating a position, agreeing in part, conceding a point and adding evidence to an online academic thread.
Speaking · 2 bundles
Practise the words and phrases that are hardest to say back accurately — stress patterns, weak forms and consonant clusters that trip up an otherwise strong speaker.
Build the vocabulary of a spoken interview — describing experience, giving reasons, comparing options and handling a follow-up question without losing fluency.
Why vocabulary matters for TOEFL
The TOEFL iBT Speaking and Writing rubrics include Language Use, which covers the range and precision of your vocabulary. Better word choice moves your band on the 1 to 6 scale.
Academic passages and lectures move quickly, and correct answers are usually paraphrases of what you heard or read. Knowing a word on sight leaves time for the reasoning the question actually asks for.
In Complete the Words you supply a word's missing letters from context, so recognising the word is not enough — you have to be able to produce it exactly.
Questions about the word lists
Is the TOEFL vocabulary on ExamStep free?⌄
Yes. A large set of words for every task is free to browse with full definitions, examples and exam tips. A pass unlocks the complete list for each task plus spaced-repetition flashcards, quizzes and progress tracking.
How is the vocabulary organised?⌄
By task type in the TOEFL iBT, following the sections ETS publishes — Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Each bundle targets the language one specific task calls for, rather than being a general academic word list.
What do the levels next to each word mean?⌄
They follow the 1 to 6 band scale ETS uses for each TOEFL iBT section, alongside the CEFR level ETS maps each band to: 6 is C2, 5 is C1, 4 is B2, 3 is B1, 2 is A2 and 1 is A1.
What is the best way to memorise TOEFL vocabulary?⌄
Spaced repetition. Use the free flashcards and quizzes in the vocabulary trainer to review words just before you forget them. For Complete the Words, practise writing each word out, not just recognising it.
